On Sixth Anniversary Of The Virginia Tech Massacre, Families, Survivors Reflect On Bombings

WASHINGTON (WUSA) --  It is the 6th anniversary of the Virginia Tech massacre and Lily Habtu sometimes feels like it was yesterday.

She almost died that day. Many of her classmates did.

Habtu was shot in the wrist and jaw and a bullet is still lodged one millimeter from her brain stem too dangerous to remove.  Her recovery physically and mentally continues.  She's already had several reconstruction surgeries on her jaw and face and wears braces on her teeth to help correct the damage there.

She's been filled with survivor's guilt at times.  All this, the guilt, the pain, the continuous medical procedures, may soon be familiar to the wounded from the Boston Marathon bombings.

"We'll heal and grow, but we'll always live with this for the rest of lives.  I think all survivors of traumatic events have that in common," said Habtu.

Obama, Scorsese, Winfrey lead tributes to Roger Ebert

(USA TODAY) -- President Obama led a chorus of voices paying tribute to legendary film critic Roger Ebert, who died Thursday at the age of 70 after a prolonged battle with cancer.

The fellow Chicagoan and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer "was the movies," Obama said. "The movies won't be the same without Roger, and our thoughts and prayers are with (Ebert's wife) Chaz and the rest of the Ebert family," Obama said.

Director Martin Scorsese, who is executive-producing a documentary on Ebert, called the passing "an incalculable loss for movie culture and for film criticism. And it's a loss for me personally."

Dead man found dangling from Calif. high rise

(USA TODAY) -- An apparent graffiti tagger was found dead in a rope harness on the side of an 18-story office tower near the California Capitol on Monday morning, Sacramento police said.

The unidentified man's body was reported dangling at 7:45 a.m. PT around the 14th floor of the the 1201 K Tower, home to lobbyists, public relations people and lawyers. Police said it appears he was accidentally asphyxiated when he rappelled from the top of the 240-foot building, which is two blocks from the Capitol.

The building had not been defaced, but spray paint and an etching tool were found on the roof, said Officer Michelle Gigante.

The man, who appeared to be in his 30s, had looped two ropes into a harness similar to what rock climbers use and connected it to a window-washer's hook on the 17th floor.
