"The Best Pizza I've Ever Ate": Foggy Bottom

Although D.C. is clearly on the upswing when it comes to the culinary industry, one type of food that is not well represented in this city is pizza.

Foggy Bottom and Dupont Circle are stacked with lunch joints, and while you can find dozens of giant chain eateries like Cosi and Chop’t, it’s very difficult to find a small spot with a neighborhood feel.  Furthermore, to find this type of place serving fantastic pizza is virtually impossible.

Until you walk into Washington Deli…which has “The Best Pizza I’ve Ever Ate: Foggy Bottom”.

Until I recently tried Top Chef Spike Mendelsohn’s We The Pizza in Eastern Market, I would have said Washington Deli served the best ‘za in the entire city.

So what makes it so good?

“Our pizza is the best because we make our own dough, we make our own sauce daily, we use the best mozzarella cheese that you can buy,” Said Washington Deli’s own Brett Chamberlain.  “The flavors, the different ideas that we have, the variety that we have.   I think that’s what really makes us great.”

Chamberlain does not lie.  The sauces, crust, and cheeses are spectacular.  And I don’t even like cheese.

One striking quality of Washington Deli is the variety of pizza.  There are tons of different styles of pies.  I’ve had slices ranging from fresh basil to barbecue chicken to my old favorite/now defunct chicken Caesar.

Chamberlain had some advice for newbies who might be a bit intimidated or overwhelmed with the variety.

“Always go with cheese or pepperoni first,” Chamberlain said.  “Then, if you want to branch out, try some of our white pizzas…our white with spinach, mushrooms, and feta, or our tomato pesto.  That’s how I’d go first.  Start simple, then branch out.”

Washington Deli offers a lunch deal for seven dollars plus tax that includes two slices of pizza of your choice and a soda.

While pizza is what Washington Deli is known for, that's not all they have.

“You could spend two years trying to eat your way through here,” Chamberlain said with a smile. “We have everything from sandwiches to salads, salad bar, everything.”

Washington Deli is certainly the best pizza I’ve ever eaten in Foggy Bottom, and on my top-rated list for the entire city.

Washington Deli is open from 6 a.m.-5 p.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturdays.  For more information, call them at 202-331-3344.
