Aruba Grace
“February 2012 was Aruba Grace's first anniversary with my flock, which includes her sister Firooza Violetta, and brother Sonny C. Aruba’s other brother, Vic, sadly passed away in January after a battle with neurological issues. Near the end of Vic's life, Firooza started ignoring him; however, Aruba Grace was the one who stuck by him, feeding and warbling to him. I was worried she would stop eating when we lost him, however, she has adjusted well and is back to flying, bathing, singing, ringing bells, and swinging to bluegrass music. In fact, the flock is now getting along like the ‘Three Musketeers.’ One day, the trio made a group effort to push their bird bath off the cage top, sending it crashing to the floor and splashing the water out of it!”

This is the Eighth of an Eight-Part Feature on the designers’ vision and progress at the DC Design House, which is now open through May 13th. The DC Design House benefits Children's National Medical Center.

Victoria Sanchez of Victoria Sanchez Interiors in Alexandria, VA, www.victoriasanchezinteriors.com, was inspired by her own children for the design of Space 21, the Teenager’s Getaway. “I looked to their likes and dislikes, and their wants and desires as I created this design,” says Sanchez, who is excited to part of the Design House but also knows the amount of work that had to be completed in a short period of time.

For the second year in a row, Nadia Subaran of Aidan Design in Bethesda, MD, www.aidandesign.com, is part of the DC Design House. “It’s truly an honor,” Subaran says. “I feel very grateful to be in the company of so many fine designers.” Last year, Subaran designed the Pool Kitchen and this year took on the much larger main Kitchen in this Spring Valley home.

This is the Sixth of an Eight-Part Feature on the designers’ vision and progress at the DC Design House, which is underway and set to open on April 14th.

The top floor of the Fifth Annual DC Design House includes three spaces. Susan Nelson of Susan Nelson Interiors of Great Falls, VA, www.susannelsoninteriors.com, is designing Space 17, the Daughter’s Bedroom. By combining block and geometric prints in green, yellow, pink, brown and cream, Nelson creates a cozy haven. “By using a mix of new and repurposed furniture, the room has a quality of changing along with the girl,” Nelson says. For instance, the coverlet features a sophisticated fabric with a watercolor quality, while the club chair is slipcovered in a fun confetti print in pinks and purples that the “daughter” might have loved as a child.
