People Travel From Across The County To Celebrate National Chili Dog Day

WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- Some people just needed a little chili and cheese today.

"I woke up this morning and I said 'I want a chili dog.' Then I found out it's National Chili Dog day, so God sent me here!" DC resident Lamikha Evlyn said.

Lamikha, like many die hard chili fans took the opportunity to celebrate National Chili Dog Day at historical Ben's Chili Bowl on U Street.

In fact some people traveled from across the country to join in festivities.

"I came from Lincoln, Ohio just for this," Bob Harasuik said.

And Julian Madison of Dallas, Texas says he didn't just fly in for fraternity reunions.

"We came down for the Omega Psi Phi centennial celebration this weekend, but it's his first time in DC, so we left the airport and came straight to Bens Chili Bowl," Madison said.

The District of Columbia has activated its multi-agency heat plan in response to forecasts from the National Weather Service (NWS) calling for temperatures in the upper 90s to around 100 degrees over the next several days, with heat-index values predicted to reach as high as 115 degrees. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous situation in which heat-related illnesses are possible. The multi-agency heat plan will remain in effect as long as the daily high temperature reaches 95 degrees or higher.

Hit the Trail
