A Super NOVA is a person with a unique talent or business that makes them stand out in the crowd of Northern Virginia. Sanam Toossi is this week’s Super NOVA for her involvement in The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. This year Toossi was nominated as a candidate for Woman of the Year in the national ten-week campaign to raise funds to help find cures for blood cancers.

“I was nominated by someone who used to work for the LLS. She knew of my charitable work, my involvement with Junior League and the work of my professional volunteer group, The Audrey Bouviers. She felt my various charity involvement would help be successful with the campaign,” said Toossi.

The kickoff of the ten-week campaign was March 31 and it ends on June 11. Toossi has come up with extremely creative ways to do her fundraising for the campaign, including last night’s Drag Bingo at the Ritz-Carlton in Georgetown. Check out the video to learn more about the event.

Last night DJ G mixed up the beats, and Drag Queen Bill Pietruchca, aka Ann C Michaels was the MC. Guests were invited to play bingo, buy raffle tickets, and get their faces painted by Joyce Frank. Everyone received 1 free drink ticket of Veev's Acai Spirit with the suggested $10 donation at the door.

Other events included in Toossi’s campaign are a Care to Lunch luncheon this Thursday, a fashion show called “Fashion for Cause” on May 5, and a Gold Party on May 18.

Toossi’s financial goal is to raise $50,000. “It’s a big goal, but I want to aim high. Hopefully I’ll get there and go past it!” exclaimed Toossi. The funds raised during these campaigns goes towards research, education, advocacy, and support services for patients and their families. According to Toossi, this past year there were 2,500 patients who were served by this chapter alone.

Look out for more Super NOVAs every Wednesday afternoon going forward. Email escott@wusa9.com if you want to nominate yourself, or someone you know that deserves to be recognized as a Super NOVA!
